Coastal city of Istanbul is truly a most exuberant city situated in the Mediterranean region. It has a glorious history as it’s been a part of Byzantine, Roman, and Ottoman Empire. It is bordered by sea on all sides and spans on two continents Asia and Europe. People commute from Asian part to European and vice versa by using its famous commuter ferries.
Istanbul has a population of 12.8 million and it’s the second largest metropolis of Europe. Its culture has influences of Arabs in east and Romans in west. The long glorious past has enriched its arts, music, dance and literature. This year Istanbul has been chosen as the European capital of culture 2010, a title that Istanbul truly deserves.
Every year, many cultural activities are hosted by this city like music and opera festivals, live concerts at the historic sites and other locations. Being the commercial and cultural center of Turkey, it is full of activities for 24 hours a day, night clubs, pubs and cafes offering wide range of entertainment from traditional Turkish songs, floor shows to ballet dance. Moreover, you can enjoy cuisine of your choice; local and far eastern food, all is available here. Seafood restaurants are also famous in Istanbul and they are situated at shores of Bosphorus sea in South of the city.
It has numerous stunning historic monuments, museums, mosques and castles; those were built in the time of byzantine and ottoman empires. You can experience amazing architectural wonders of 6th century’s Aya Sophia that displays the fine byzantine mosaic. The Topkapi palace is the oldest palace of the world; its magnificent sites will transform you into another time. Moreover, you would see Blue Mosque that is famous for its decorated interiors with Islamic calligraphy and iznik tiles. No doubt, it is the most beautiful architectural piece from Ottoman period.
Another popular tourist spot is grand bazaar which has over 4000 shops offering beautiful pottery, rugs, jewelry, textiles, leather goods, antiques and more. Everything is negotiable here; you should be good at bargaining. Moreover, the modern shopping centers of Istanbul are known as the best of the worlds. Sile is a beautiful sea side resort of Istanbul with white sand beaches. Kilyos is another beach resort famous for its night parties, live concerts in summer, and it also offers a beach park, many restaurants and swimming facilities.
The 360 Istanbul is a popular restaurant among tourists with fine Turkish cuisine and modern international cuisine. It also offers a 360 view of the city from its beautiful windows, therefore it is a must visit place. Apart from this, there are thousands of hotels catering tourist and vacationers which offers their services at very affordable prices. Tourists from all over the world find the locals very welcoming that make Istanbul an increasingly popular worldwide destination.
